Global MBA Testimonials

The process of creating value through work-integrated learning is extraordinary. It shifts the primary learning experience from the confines of academic institutions to the actual workplaces of our students. This transformation leads to an unparalleled sense of purpose, as it transitions skills training from theoretical teaching to the invaluable experience gained on the job.

Additionally, work-integration redirects the traditional focus of study from analysis to practical implementation. It is the act of implementation that has the power to bring about real change in the world. This new approach enables students to realize their potential in effecting positive changes within their work environments.

We invite you to explore the remarkable feedback from some of our students who have been willing to openly share their experiences of creating genuine value in their workplaces.

Contribution based activity was the key learning point in this assignment. For us the gross profit contribution per production hour provides an invaluable link between our growth objective and the day-to-day operations.

For effective management, I am going to focus on contribution-based activity to drive sustainable growth for our business. Think in profit per hour terms! This is the theme my business unit is going to run with in the next planning year.

interpret key metrics, a crucial skill for any finance-related role, not only in business, but also
in individual financial management. It also provided practical, hands-on experience in using
financial ratios to assess business performance, which is directly applicable in real-world
financial analysis and decision-making. The skills and knowledge gained from this unit will
be invaluable for future roles involving financial planning, analysis, or management, enabling

The timing of this module and the assignment coincided with me being nominated to lead a capacity expansion project within our company. This project is expected to consolidate our market position. The learnings offered in this module could not have been timelier. I got a chance to review and utilise the learning points in real time as I was learning. The case study I presented in the assignment was the highlight of my career for a long time. I considered it a huge success. However, having the privilege to dissect it from the perspectives offered in this module made me realise that there is always room for improvement. I am more than geared to make the next project even more successful though application of learning points from this module.

I have always asked myself how a leader can help a business create unique and not so easy to replicate competitive advantages. In a world where benchmarking is becoming a standard industry practice, it is increasingly becoming difficult to differentiate a business model. This module has brought together the tools that can help me navigate the competitive challenges in our industry. I believe in building teams to drive performance. “You have formulated a sound strategy, but can you execute it?” This question by Kaplan and Norton (2004) got me thinking about how I can help my business to build a long-term view in our strategy execution.

This assignment has been instrumental in catalysing meaningful discussions among the partners, fostering a structured dialogue focused on the significance of reaching consensus of a shared vision, mission, and values. These discussions have not only solidified our collective understanding of the firm’s strategic direction but also refined our approach to achieving both long-term and short-term goals. The development of the strategy map was particularly enlightening, as it challenged me to think critically about the cause-and-effect relationships inherent in our operations. This exercise has
broadened my perspective, revealing new opportunities for growth and improvement that extend beyond the firm to my other business ventures, enhancing my overall strategic thinking and management skills.

During the analysis and reflection on these two cases, I gained significant insights that have contributed both personally and to the organization. On a personal level, I realized the importance of adapting my communication style to different cultural contexts. Understanding the relationship-focused approach of Zimbabwean clients and the formal, detail-oriented nature of Namibian clients has allowed me to tailor my interactions more effectively, resulting in better engagement and stronger relationships. This insight has deepened my cultural awareness and enhanced my ability to navigate complex sales processes across diverse markets.

While reading through Malik's prescribed text, it became clear that team management is not something only the few are called to. The guidance to 5 simple principles has changed my way of looking at how I get team members to perform at their peak by looking at what they find easy to do. I’ve always understood trust in a team and made it clear that I am responsible when the team, or a team member, makes a mistake. What I found compelling is to ensure recognition of a team member when they achieve and not to just say “it’s a team effort”.

Wow! I cannot believe that am now actually writing the conclusion of this assignment. It has been a journey that saw me change the organisation used for the assignment, from the mining  company to the new start-up school that belongs to the family.

The value that I believe I have created for myself is actually working on a project document that is very real and begin to be profitable, not only now but for posterity.

This assignment has brought so much insight on how a lot of things need to be done. It has enabled me to make fact based contributions on how to grow the school, because I have been analysing the data and numbers. Thus enabling the team to have a holistic view of what we have done, what we are doing and what still needs to be done.

Another important lesson was understanding the need to concentrate on a few key tasks. Previously, I spread my efforts too thin, reducing my effectiveness. Now, I understand the importance of focus and have started identifying the the main tasks for each week or month and concentrating only on them. I believe this will help me achieve better results.

Such a rewarding experience during this residential. It was a priviledge to spend time with the teams at Karl Küfner GmbH & Co. KG and Rohde & Schwarz . These family owned institutions have been in business for decades, yet continue to find ways to stay relevant with a continuous focus on excellence and innovation. Professor Adrienne Rubatos facilitation of the whole residential provided us with the most relevant tools for application. This is the IBR Institute of International Business Relations way!

The impact of attending the Strategy Residential with IBR Institute of International Business Relations and Dr. Andreas Kelling can be likened to the dropping of a bomb. Strategies, corporate or other business strategies, if not viewed through the lense of customer value is of less use than the paper it is prnter on. This revelation was one of many and had me questioning, actually doubting, everything I've been taught about future-based thinking and planning.

I throughly enjoyed the residential's face to face vibe, with workshops and knowledge sharing. I doubt the impact would have been as profound if attending a video conferrence or Teams meeting/call. Thank you to all new friends and contacts, for making this event an unforgettable experience and an appetiser for what is to come from IBR Institute of International Business Relations. I can't wait for the upcoming residentials and consultation/tutoring sessions!

As wholesome and pragmatic a learning adventure as one can get. This is how I can summarize my experience during the just concluded IBR Institute of International Business Relations Global MBA's Strategy Residential with Dr. Andreas Kelling. I have emerged on the other side with a clearer perspective on the ins and outs of how to craft effective corporate strategy in a dynamic environment.

The multiple learning points were well interconnected with practical examples and case studies that brought the concepts to life in a very insightful way. It was particularly enriching to work on a live case study and get invaluable input from the Professor and fellow colleagues in the MBA group. I am chomping at the bit now to get out there and not just talk strategy but formulate it, tell a compelling story, and implement it effectively in my own organisation and future endeavours. The value I have gained from this Strategy Residential cannot be understated, and I am more than glad to have been a part of it.

This assignment has really opened my eyes with how I deal with international business relationships. You need to know who your customer/supplier/partner is, understand how they do business, what are the cultural patterns and study them to create long lasting business relationships. I am now more excited than ever to deal with new cultures, so I can study them and teach myself to do business with them.
